Success Story sensorProbe2 (AK-SP2)

Institute of Astrophysics of the University of Göttingen

Client: Institute for Astrophysics of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen
Requirements Profile: Precise monitoring of temperature and relative humidity of 50-cm telescope and the telescope dome.

The prestigious Institute of Astrophysics of the Georg-August University of Göttingen in Göttingen is home to a modern reflector telescope with a mirror 50 cm in diameter and 5 m focal length, which is used in the teaching of physics and the internship placement as well as for astrophysics.

To counter the dew on the primary mirror of the telescope as early as possible to search for a suitable solution for monitoring the environmental factors temperature and humidity.

This was to fulfill the following requirements:

a.) precise monitoring of temperature and humidity in the telescope as well as within the telescope dome
b.) Long-term recording of measured values / Graphic display of measured values
c) Timely and reliable alarms when state changes

The solution:

Didactum® offered AKCP sensorProbe2 (AK-SP2) to monitoring the temperature and humidity of the telescope and the telescope dome.

Fig.2: Close-up of the telescope. At the bottom of the screen is easily visible via the CAT-5 cable to be renewed for up to 300 meters dual sensor temperature and humidity. The dual sensor AK THS00 is the early detection of dew formation of the telescope primary mirror with temperature and humidity fluctuations.

As part of the moisture measurement range between 80 and 100% is particularly critical. Here, the Institute for Astrophysics receive a timely warning - before the undesirable uses dew on the mirror surface of the telescope.

Dank der kompakten Bauweise des sensorProb2 Ueberwachungsgeraetes ist diese (fast) ueberall zu installieren   Fig.3: The AKCP sensorProbe2 (AK-SP2) attached to the inner wall of the telescope dome. The compact design of this sensorProbe2 install almost anywhere. Also on the inner wall of the telescope dome, another AKCP dual sensor was installed to detect the temperature gradient between the dome and the temperature of the telescope structure, which deteriorate the quality of observation by the so-called "dome seeing" (thermals of the telescope itself and the telescope dome) can.
Die Temperatur- und Luftfeuchtigkeitswerte werden vom Institut fuer Astrophysik auch per Web dargestellt.   Fig.4: The information collected by the sensorProbe2 temperature and humidity values of the mirror cell and the telescope dome are shown here via the web.

The sensorProbe2 notifications and alarms via SNMP trap can send it via email and via SMS (via e-mail to SMS gateway).
Die Messwerte des AKCP Kombisensors Temperatur und Luftfeuchte koennen auf Wunsch auch per SNMP-Polling direkt abgefragt werden.   Fig.6: The SNMP-enabled AKCP dual sensor temperature and relative humidity is detected automatically by the Auto Sense feature of the sensorProbe2. Furthermore, the dual-sensor has an OID, which can be read by network management systems.
